Free SSL vs paid SSL: what are the differences?

Last updated: 31 December 2025

Free SSL: just as secure as paid?

The encryption of free SSL certificates is identical to paid alternatives. Technically, there is no difference in security. However, there are situations where a paid certificate is the better choice.

What do you get with free SSL?

Let's Encrypt is the most well-known free option and offers:

  • 256-bit encryption (industry standard)
  • Automatic renewal every 90 days
  • DV certificates (Domain Validation)
  • Support for multiple domains (SAN)
  • Wildcard certificates for subdomains

Most Dutch hosting providers integrate Let's Encrypt by default. You don't need to configure anything yourself.

When to choose paid SSL?

Warranty for data breaches

Paid certificates offer warranties up to €1,500,000 if a security breach occurs due to a certificate flaw. With free SSL, you don't have this coverage.

Business validation

Want visitors to verify your company name? Then you need at least an OV certificate. Let's Encrypt doesn't offer this.

Longer validity period

Free certificates expire after 90 days. Paid certificates are often valid for 1-2 years, meaning fewer renewal moments.

Premium support

If you have problems with a paid certificate, you get help from the CA. Let's Encrypt only offers community support.

Our recommendation

Free SSL is sufficient for:

  • Personal websites and blogs
  • Small business websites
  • Test environments

Choose paid SSL for:

  • Online stores with payment processing
  • Websites with sensitive customer data
  • Companies wanting to convey extra trust

Start with free SSL. Only when you need specific warranties or validation does upgrading to paid make sense.
