Cancel Hosting and Migrate: Complete Guide
Published on 09 December 2025
When should you cancel hosting?
There are several reasons to cancel hosting and migrate:
- Slow loading times
- Poor customer service
- Too expensive for what you get
- Frequent downtime
- Your website has grown and needs better hosting
Preparation is important
Before canceling your hosting, you must first choose a new provider and prepare everything.
Step 1: Choose a new hosting provider
Check our hosting comparison and look for:
- Price-quality ratio
- Uptime guarantee (minimum 99.9%)
- SSD storage for faster performance
- Free website migration service
- Quality support
Step 2: Create a backup
IMPORTANT: Always create a full backup before you start!
Via cPanel or Plesk:
- Log in to your current hosting
- Go to Backup Manager
- Download a full backup (files + database)
- Store it safely on your computer
Via plugin (WordPress):
- UpdraftPlus
- All-in-One WP Migration
- Duplicator
Step 3: Check your cancellation period
Check your current contract:
- Notice period: often 1 month
- Contract end date: prevent automatic renewal
- Refund: some providers refund money for early cancellation
The migration process
Step 4: Order new hosting
- Choose a suitable package at your new provider
- Order WITHOUT domain name (you already have one)
- Ask if they offer free migration
Many providers like TransIP and Vimexx offer free migration service.
Step 5: Migrate your website
Option A: Free migration by provider
Most modern hosting providers offer free migration:
- Open a support ticket with your new provider
- Give access to your old hosting (temporarily)
- They migrate everything for you
Option B: Migrate yourself
For advanced users:
- Upload your backup to the new hosting
- Import the database
- Adjust database credentials in wp-config.php
- Test your website on temporary URL

Step 6: Adjust DNS
Note: Only do this when your website works completely on the new hosting!
- Log in to your domain name registrar
- Change the nameservers to your new hosting provider
- Or adjust the A-record to the new IP address
Propagation time: DNS changes can take 24-48 hours.
Step 7: Test everything
Check after DNS change:
- All pages load correctly
- Images are displayed
- Contact forms work
- Email still works
- SSL certificate is active
Cancel hosting with old provider
