Yoast SEO review: testing the most popular WordPress SEO plugin

Yoast SEO is the world's most popular WordPress SEO plugin, with over 13 million active installations. Since 2008, the plugin has helped website owners optimize their content for search engines. But does that popularity justify choosing Yoast? In this comprehensive review, we analyze all features, pricing, and alternatives.

The plugin was developed by Joost de Valk and his team in the Netherlands. What started as a small SEO plugin has grown into a complete suite with tools for content analysis, technical SEO, and schema markup. The free version offers solid basic functionality, while Yoast SEO Premium adds advanced features for €99 per year.

What exactly is Yoast SEO?

Yoast SEO automates technical SEO tasks and helps you write content that ranks better in Google. The plugin automatically generates XML sitemaps, sets canonical URLs, and prevents duplicate content issues. The most recognizable component is the content analysis with its green, orange, and red traffic light system.

You get real-time feedback while writing. Yoast analyzes your text for readability, keyword usage, and technical SEO factors. The traffic light indicates whether your content is ready to publish. Green means well-optimized, orange is decent, red signals problems you need to fix.

The plugin adds a meta box below your editor with different tabs. Here you configure your SEO title, meta description, focus keyword, and social media previews. Yoast shows directly how your page will look in Google search results and on Facebook and Twitter.

Technical SEO automation

Yoast handles technical SEO matters that you'd otherwise need to code manually. The plugin automatically generates canonical tags to prevent duplicate content. It configures OpenGraph tags for Facebook and Twitter Cards for beautiful social media previews. XML sitemaps are automatically generated and updated when you publish or modify content.

Breadcrumbs are built-in and can be added to your theme with a single line of code. These breadcrumb trails help users navigate and give Google context about your site structure. Yoast automatically adds schema markup to your breadcrumbs so they can appear as rich results.

The plugin prevents category and tag archives from competing with each other through smart canonicalization. You can set per post type whether it should be indexed. This is useful for custom post types that shouldn't appear in Google like testimonials or team members.

Installation and setup wizard

Installation is done via Plugins > Add New in WordPress. Search for "Yoast SEO" and click Install, then Activate. After activation, the configuration wizard automatically starts, guiding you through basic settings.

The wizard first asks what type of website you have: blog, shop, news site, or small business. This choice determines which features Yoast activates. For a shop, it automatically enables WooCommerce integration, for example.

Next, you configure your organization details. Enter your company name, logo, and social media profiles. Yoast uses this information to generate schema markup so Google understands your organization. This helps with knowledge panels and other rich results.

The wizard asks if you want to connect Google Search Console. This is optional but useful for seeing crawl errors directly in WordPress. You can skip this step and manually connect later via Search Console itself.

Initial configuration tips

After the wizard, go through the SEO settings under SEO > General. At "Features" you can enable or disable certain modules. XML sitemaps are enabled by default and should stay that way. Social media previews are useful, the Ryte integration can be disabled.

Go to SEO > Search Appearance and check settings per content type. For posts and pages, you want "Show posts/pages in search results" set to "Yes". Categories and tags default to "Yes", but if you have thin content on taxonomy pages, consider setting these to "No".

Under SEO > Social, enter your social media URLs. Upload a default image used as fallback when a page has no featured image. This image appears when content is shared on social media.

Free vs Premium features

The free version of Yoast SEO is surprisingly complete. You get XML sitemaps, canonical URLs, breadcrumbs, social media integration, and full content analysis with traffic light system. For many websites, the free version is sufficient.

Yoast SEO Premium costs €99 per year for one website. This adds important features missing from the free version. The biggest added value is in redirect manager, internal linking suggestions, and multiple focus keywords.

Premium exclusive features

Redirect manager: When you change or delete a URL, Yoast automatically detects this and immediately offers to set up a redirect. This prevents 404 errors and preserves your SEO value. In the free version, you need a separate plugin like Redirection for this.

Multiple focus keywords: The free version analyzes content for one focus keyword. Premium lets you add up to five related keywords. Useful for long-tail variants or semantically related search terms. You see a separate traffic light for each keyword.

Internal linking suggestions: While you write, Yoast suggests relevant articles to link to. This is based on content analysis and helps improve your internal linking structure. Better internal links spread PageRank and help users find relevant content.

Content insights: Shows which words you use most in your article. This helps you write topically relevant content where you naturally use related terms. Google values topical authority.

Orphaned content filter: Identifies posts that have no internal links. These "orphaned" pages are difficult to find for users and Google. The filter helps you discover these pages so you can link them or remove them.

24/7 support: Premium customers get email support from the Yoast team. The free version must rely on community forums. Support usually responds within 24 hours on business days.

Premium training: Access to the Yoast SEO Academy with video training on SEO fundamentals, content writing, and technical SEO. Useful for beginners, less added value for advanced users.

Is Premium worth it?

For hobby blogs and small websites, the free version is fine. Upgrade to Premium if you regularly change URLs, produce lots of content, or need professional support. The redirect manager alone can be worth the €99 if you manage many redirects.

WooCommerce shops benefit from Premium because of better product SEO features. Content marketers with multiple focus keywords per article benefit from multiple keyword analysis. Agencies managing client websites often want Premium for support and redirect management.

Traffic light system explained

The traffic light system is the face of Yoast SEO. While writing, you see a color code: red, orange, or green. This indicator shows your content's SEO quality. The goal is a green score, but don't obsess over it.

SEO analysis checks

Yoast checks if your focus keyword appears in important elements. The SEO title (page title) must contain your keyword, preferably at the beginning. The meta description should mention the keyword. The URL slug (permalink) must contain a version of your keyword without stopwords.

Your H1 header (post title) must contain the keyword. In subheadings (H2, H3) Yoast wants to see the keyword too, but that's less critical. The first paragraph must contain your keyword within the first 10% of your text. This signals to Google what your content is about.

Keyword density is checked. Too little use (under 0.5%) and Google might not understand your topic well. Too much use (over 2.5%) and you risk keyword stuffing penalties. Yoast recommends 0.5-2.5%, which equals 5-25 times per 1000 words.

The analysis also checks image alt text. At least one image must have your focus keyword in the alt text. This helps with image search rankings and makes your site more accessible for screen readers.

Outbound links are checked. Yoast advises at least one link to an external, authoritative source. This shows your content is well-supported. Internal links are also important, the analysis checks if you link to other content on your own site.

Readability analysis

Besides SEO, Yoast analyzes readability with the Flesch Reading Ease test. This formula calculates how easy your text is to read based on sentence length and word length. Dutch texts score differently than English due to longer compound words.

Yoast warns about sentences longer than 20 words. Long sentences are harder to understand and lose readers. Break long sentences into shorter chunks. Mind you: sometimes long sentences are needed for nuance. See Yoast's advice as a guideline, not law.

Paragraph length is checked. Paragraphs longer than 150 words get a warning. On screens, people scan, they don't read every word. Short paragraphs make text airy and scannable. Alternate between short (2-3 sentences) and medium paragraphs (4-5 sentences).

Passive sentences are detected. "The ball was kicked by John" is passive, "John kicked the ball" is active. Active sentences are more direct and powerful. Yoast warns if more than 10% of your sentences are passive. This is especially important in English; Dutch has more natural passive constructions.

Subheading density is measured. Long blocks of text without subheadings are off-putting. Yoast advises placing a subheading every 300 words. This breaks up content and helps readers scan.

Schema markup configuration

Schema markup helps search engines understand your content and can lead to rich results like stars, prices, FAQs, and how-to steps in Google. Yoast SEO automatically adds basic schema, but for extensive schema, you need the premium version or a separate plugin.

Automatic schema output

Yoast automatically generates Organization or Person schema on your homepage. In the configuration wizard, you chose whether your site represents an organization or person. This information helps Google understand your entity for knowledge panels.

WebSite schema is added with your site name and potential search box. Article schema automatically goes on blog posts with author, publication date, and featured image. WebPage schema is used on pages without a specific type.

Breadcrumb schema makes your breadcrumb trail eligible for rich results in Google. These breadcrumbs appear above your snippet and show your site hierarchy. Users immediately see where a page sits in your site.

Schema extensions

For advanced schema, you need Yoast SEO Premium or a separate schema plugin like Schema Pro or WP SEO Structured Data Schema. Premium adds FAQ and HowTo schema blocks that you use in the Gutenberg editor.

FAQ schema lets you mark questions and answers. Google can display these directly in search results as rich results. This takes up lots of SERP space and increases your visibility. HowTo schema works similarly for step-by-step instructions.

For WooCommerce shops, Yoast automatically adds Product schema with prices, stock status, ratings, and reviews. This generates rich snippets with stars and prices in Google Shopping and organic results.

Local Business schema for physical businesses must be added with premium or a separate plugin. Here you specify opening hours, address, phone number, and geo-coordinates. This is crucial for local SEO and Google Maps rankings.

Pros and cons

Pros:

Mature and stable: Yoast has existed since 2008 and is thoroughly tested by millions of websites. Updates are frequent but rarely break anything. The codebase is professional and follows WordPress best practices.

Excellent documentation: Yoast has extensive knowledge base articles, video tutorials, and active community forums. For almost any problem or question, documentation is available. The Yoast SEO blog regularly publishes in-depth SEO guides.

User-friendly for beginners: The interface is intuitive and clear. The traffic light system gives immediate feedback without needing to be SEO technical. Tooltips explain terms and the setup wizard guides you through configuration.

Automatic technical SEO: Canonical URLs, XML sitemaps, robots meta tags, OpenGraph and Twitter Cards are automatically handled. You don't need to code or understand technical details. This prevents many common SEO mistakes.

Regular updates: The team pushes monthly updates with bug fixes, new features, and adjustments for Google algorithm changes. You automatically get notifications in WordPress when updates are available.

Built-in breadcrumbs: Breadcrumb navigation is integrated with schema markup. You only need to add one line of code to your theme to activate them. Many other plugins require separate breadcrumb plugins.

WooCommerce integration: For shops, there are special product SEO features included. Product schema, category optimization, and duplicate content prevention for product variations work out-of-the-box.

Cons:

Performance impact: Yoast is not the lightest plugin. It loads extra CSS and JavaScript on your admin and frontend. For most sites this isn't a problem, but on shared hosting with limited resources, you might notice slowdown. Alternatives like The SEO Framework are lighter.

Free version lacks redirect manager: URL redirects are essential for SEO when you move or delete content. The free Yoast version has no redirect functionality. You must install a separate plugin like Redirection or upgrade to Premium.

Only one focus keyword free: Content often ranks for multiple related keywords. The free version analyzes just one keyword, while competitor Rank Math offers unlimited keywords free. Optimizing for one keyword is too limited.

Premium relatively expensive: €99 per year for one site is on the high side compared to alternatives. Rank Math Pro costs €59 per year for unlimited sites. All in One SEO Pro is €49.50 per year. Yoast's pricing is especially painful for hobbyists with multiple sites.

Basic schema limited: The free version does basic schema, but for FAQ, HowTo, Local Business, Event, and other types, you need premium or a separate plugin. Rank Math offers many more schema types free.

Sales-oriented UI: In the free version, you regularly see ads and upsell messages for Premium. This can be distracting. Competitors like SEOPress are more subtle with their premium promotion.

Overkill for simple sites: If you have a simple blog without complex SEO needs, Yoast can be too much. Lighter alternatives like The SEO Framework offer enough functionality without the bloat.

Pricing and licenses

Yoast SEO free is fully functional and unlimited to use on as many sites as you want. There is no trial period because basic functionality remains permanently free. You get updates and security patches.

Yoast SEO Premium costs €99 per year and this is per site. For one website you pay €99, for five websites 5 × €99 = €495 per year. There is no multi-site discount. For agencies and people with multiple sites, this quickly becomes expensive.

The premium license includes one year of updates and support. After one year, the plugin continues to work, but you no longer get updates or support. You must renew to receive new features and security patches.

Payment terms

Yoast uses automatic renewal. Your credit card is charged again every year unless you disable auto-renewal in your account. This is enabled by default, so set a reminder if you don't want to renew.

Payment is possible via credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) or PayPal. Invoices are automatically generated and sent via email. VAT is calculated; for EU customers with a valid VAT number, you can request zero-rating.

There is a 30-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked. If Premium doesn't suit you, request a full refund within a month. You don't need to provide a reason. This makes testing virtually risk-free.

Extension packs

Besides Premium, Yoast offers specific extensions for €69 each per year. Local SEO for physical businesses with multiple locations, Video SEO for video optimization, News SEO for Google News, and WooCommerce SEO for shops (although basic WooCommerce support is in core).

For most websites, these extensions are overkill. Local SEO is useful for restaurant chains or retail chains with multiple locations. Video SEO is only sensible if video is your primary content type. News SEO is specific for news publishers wanting to be in Google News.

Who is Yoast SEO suitable for?

Yoast is a solid all-round choice for most WordPress websites. The plugin works well for beginners thanks to the user-friendly interface and clear feedback. Intermediate users appreciate the technical SEO automation and schema options.

Bloggers and content creators have enough with the free version. You get content analysis, XML sitemaps, and social media integration without paying. Upgrade to Premium if you regularly change URLs or want to analyze multiple keywords.

Small businesses with a business website can manage fine with Yoast free. Add your business details in the configuration, write good meta descriptions, and optimize your pages with content analysis. For local SEO with opening hours and locations, you need the Local SEO extension or a separate plugin.

Less suitable for

Websites with limited resources and slow hosting should consider whether Yoast's performance impact is acceptable. Test your load time before and after installation with GTmetrix or PageSpeed Insights. If you see more than 200ms extra load time, consider a lighter alternative like The SEO Framework.

Agencies managing many client websites find Yoast's per-site pricing model expensive. For ten websites, you pay €990 per year. Alternatives like Rank Math Pro (€59 for unlimited sites) or SEOPress (€249 for unlimited sites) are much more affordable.

Advanced SEO professionals wanting full control can find Yoast limiting. The plugin makes choices for you that you can't always override. The SEO Framework gives more granular control without getting in the way.

Shops with thousands of products sometimes notice performance issues with Yoast because it does SEO analysis for each product. WooCommerce integration is good, but for very large catalogs, a more lightweight solution might perform better.

Alternatives to Yoast SEO

Yoast dominates the WordPress SEO market, but it's certainly not your only option. Three strong alternatives are Rank Math, All in One SEO, and SEOPress. Each has unique strengths.

Rank Math

Rank Math is the fastest-growing Yoast competitor. The free version offers many features that are premium in Yoast: unlimited focus keywords, redirect manager, and extensive schema types. Rank Math Pro costs €59 per year for unlimited sites.

The interface is more modern and better organized than Yoast. Setup is simple with a wizard that guides you step-by-step through configuration. Content analysis is similar to Yoast's traffic light but gives a score of 0-100.

Choose Rank Math if: You want many features free, have multiple websites, or prefer a more modern interface.

All in One SEO

All in One SEO has existed since 2007 and is as old as Yoast. The plugin has 3+ million active installations. The free version is solid and the Pro version costs €49.50 per year for one site with discounts for multiple sites.

AIOSEO has strong WooCommerce integration, local SEO features, and a TruSEO score similar to Yoast's traffic light. The interface is busier than Yoast but offers more configuration options.

Choose All in One SEO if: You want more granular control, have a shop, or have used AIOSEO for years and are satisfied.

SEOPress

SEOPress positions itself as a privacy-friendly alternative without external requests. The plugin shows no ads in your WordPress admin. SEOPress Pro costs €49 per year per site or €249 for unlimited sites.

White label functionality lets agencies add their own branding. Google Analytics integration is built-in without external scripts for GDPR compliance. Content analysis is similar to Yoast.

Choose SEOPress if: Privacy is important, you need white label functionality, or ads in your admin are annoying.

The SEO Framework

The SEO Framework is the most lightweight option. The plugin is completely free without upsells. There are no traffic light scores or content analysis – instead, it automates technical SEO without getting in your face.

Performance is excellent because the plugin is minimal and contains no unnecessary features. The philosophy is automated SEO without manual intervention. Extension manager offers optional add-ons for specific features.

Choose The SEO Framework if: Performance is critical, you want technical SEO without hand-holding, or you value minimalist software.

Frequently asked questions

Is Yoast SEO free or paid?

Yoast SEO has a fully functional free version with XML sitemaps, canonical URLs, content analysis, and social media integration. This free version is unlimited to use on as many sites as you want. Yoast SEO Premium costs €99 per year per site and adds redirect manager, multiple focus keywords, internal linking suggestions, and priority support.

Can I switch from Yoast to Rank Math without losing SEO?

Yes, Rank Math has an integrated import tool that takes over all your Yoast data: meta titles, descriptions, schema settings, and redirects. After installing Rank Math, go to Rank Math > Status & Tools > Import & Export and select Yoast SEO. The import process is one-click and preserves all your SEO configuration.

Does Yoast SEO impact my website speed?

Yoast SEO loads extra CSS and JavaScript files which makes your website slightly slower. For most websites on good hosting, this difference is minimal (50-100ms). On old shared hosting or websites with many plugins, the impact can be larger. Measure your load time with GTmetrix before and after installation to determine the impact. Lighter alternatives like The SEO Framework perform better if performance is critical.

Does Yoast SEO work with Gutenberg and page builders?

Yoast SEO works fully with the Gutenberg block editor. The meta box appears below your content with SEO analysis. For page builders like Elementor, Divi, and Beaver Builder, there is full compatibility. Yoast analyzes the content these page builders generate. For Elementor, there's even a special integration with SEO settings directly in the Elementor interface.

Is a green score in Yoast needed for good rankings?

No, a green Yoast score doesn't guarantee Google rankings and an orange score doesn't mean your page performs poorly. Yoast's analysis is a tool, not law. Google uses 200+ ranking factors, many of which fall outside Yoast's scope like backlinks, domain authority, user experience, and Core Web Vitals. Use Yoast as a guideline but don't obsess over a perfect score. Good content for your audience is more important than a green traffic light.
